Top 10 of Asia, as the official magazine partner of the recent AR Rahman Live in Kuala Lumpur 2024 had the privilege of meeting up and interviewing the legendary musician AR Rahman in conjunction with his trips to Malaysia for the show. The much anticipated blockbuster concert was organized by Malaysia’s leading and well-known event organizer for local and foreign artistes, Star Planet Sdn Bhd. This issue of the magazine offers a unique glimpse into the artist’s remarkable journey in the music industry and highlights of one of the most celebrated musical events of the year.
AR Rahman, the renowned “Mozart of Madras,” has long been synonymous with musical brilliance and innovation. Born in Chennai, India, Rahman and his rise from a young, gifted musician to an Oscar-winning legend is a story of extraordinary achievement. His breakthrough came in 1992 with the release of the Roja soundtrack, which brought him recognition from critics and solidified his distinctive fusion of traditional Indian music with other world influences. Some one month prior to the show, Rahman held an intimate fan meet and interactive session in Kuala Lumpur, sparking the uproar. Fans got an exceptional opportunity to be up-close and personal with the maestro personally at the event, and Rahman who is renowned for his depth and humility did not let them down. He gave guidance to young musicians and provided insights into his career during the event. “There are so many different ways to stand out and help. So, when you fill the void, you’re successful,” Rahman said, emphasizing the importance of individuality and purpose in artistic pursuits. He hinted that the concert will feature a mix of his non-Tamil compositions, including Hindi songs. “Since I am from Chennai catering to the world for music, I feel people should know about my work in other languages too, whether it is in English or Hindi. Most of them (Tamil Nadu people) are proud that someone from their land has gone out and done incredible stuff. So, I acknowledge that,” he explained.
