A Transformative Leader Shaping Education, Industry and Society

Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Chuah Joon Huang, President and CEO of Southern University College (Southern UC), is widely regarded as a transformative leader whose influence bridges education, industry and society. With more than 26 years of experience across academia and the engineering sector, he brings together technical mastery, strategic foresight and a strong sense of social responsibility. This special interview of Top 10 of Asia with Prof. Chuah showcases his impeccable journey as a transformative leader.

Reflecting on his journey, Prof. Chuah shares that his leadership philosophy is rooted in a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. “Education has always been about pushing boundaries—intellectually and practically,” he says. A graduate of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with a Bachelor of Engineering (First Class Honours), he later earned a Master of Engineering from the National University of Singapore, followed by a Master of Philosophy in Technology Policy from Cambridge Judge Business School and a Ph.D. in Engineering from the University of Cambridge. His time at Cambridge, where he was matriculated at Wolfson College and Gonville and Caius College, further shaped his global outlook.

Before entering academia, Prof. Chuah built his professional foundation in the semiconductor and electronic engineering industry, holding design and development roles at multinational technology companies such as Intel and Freescale Semiconductor (now NXP Semiconductors). “Industry taught me that innovation must solve real problems,” he reflects, noting that this exposure sharpened his appreciation for applied engineering and product development.

Since assuming leadership at Southern UC, Prof. Chuah has steered the institution with a bold and outward-looking vision. He highlights the importance of global connectivity, saying, “A university must be porous to the world.” Under his stewardship, Southern UC has expanded international collaborations with industry players and universities including Singapore Polytechnic, Aichi University and Xiamen University, creating broader academic and professional pathways for students.

A key pillar of his leadership is talent development aligned with regional economic needs. Prof. Chuah plays a pivotal role in Southern UC’s partnership with the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC), supporting workforce readiness for Johor and the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ). “We must reimagine education to fuel the talent pipeline for tomorrow’s industries,” he asserts, underscoring the need for close alignment between academia and industry.

This commitment is further reflected in the launch of the Southern Business School, which provides targeted training in business, management and entrepreneurship to support a rapidly evolving economic landscape. In parallel, Prof. Chuah has championed digital transformation through the establishment of the AI Research Lab, now developed into the AI Centre of Excellence at Southern UC. The centre advances initiatives across research and innovation, AI literacy, education, campus operations and community empowerment. “AI is not the future; AI is our present reality, and we must democratise its understanding for all,” he says.

Beyond institutional leadership, Prof. Chuah is deeply invested in nurturing future generations. Through collaborations with organisations such as the National STEM Association Malaysia, he actively promotes STEM education nationwide. “STEM is critical for nation-building and long-term prosperity,” he notes.

Cultural and community engagement also form a core part of his vision. Under his presidency, Southern UC has evolved into a vibrant cultural hub, highlighted by the establishment of Malaysia’s first Confucius Institute of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The institute strengthens China–Malaysia educational ties through language, culture and TCM-related public programmes. “Education is also about understanding civilisations, values and humanity,” Prof. Chuah reflects.

His influence extends into the professional arena, where he serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Malaysia Network, Vice President of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM), Board Member of the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM), and Secretary-General of the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). These roles, he believes, affirm that “engineers and educators must serve both profession and society.”

As Southern University College continues its upward trajectory, Prof. Chuah’s vision remains clear and compelling. “Education must ignite minds, empower communities, and transform the world,” he concludes.
