Olive Beverley Walls (Tan)’s educational journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, empathy and a commitment to inclusive learning. In an interview with Top 10 of Asia, she shares how her work at Star Vista International School is aimed at creating a lasting legacy that not only supports but also celebrates the unique strengths of every learner.
Olive is an experienced international educator from the United Kingdom, with over 30 years of diverse experience in successful schools and universities across Malaysia. “I am currently pursuing a Doctorial in Education, my research focuses on Project Based Learning and 21st Century skills. My educational philosophy revolves around inclusion, global mindedness, academic rigour, substantiality and providing access to learning for all students,” says Olive.
When Olive started attending school, she knew very quickly that she learnt differently. She was creative, intuitive and empathic. “I had to battle with education instead of enjoying the learning journey. My four children are unique and each has their strengths, however my fourth child, a son, approached situations very differently,” shares Olive. “This is where my journey changed, as I had to find a way to support my child, be future ready and aspire to do anything. I shifted my focus to studying and learning how to support neurodiverse students.”
“Founding Star Vista International School has been a profound honour, as it allows me to champion dyslexic thinking and create an environment where both neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals can unlock their potential and achieve wonders, continuing my vision and leaving a lasting legacy for future generations,” says Olive excitedly.
“Read, learn, observe, and apply. Craft a clear business strategy fueled by passion, dedication and hard work. Embrace true grit, chase opportunities, and never fear change. Dare to fail, for every fall is a step toward rising stronger. Dare to dream big,” she advises.
