Driven by a passion for environmental sustainability, Mr. Mervyn Chong, Founder of Biovisma Sdn Bhd, has transformed the landscape of renewable energy solutions. In an interview with Top 10 of Asia, he reflects on his journey, the obstacles he has faced, and the guiding principles behind his mission to build a more sustainable future.

Green Energy Asia (GEA), authorised by Biovisma Sdn Bhd, is tackling environmental and public health challenges with the support of municipal councils such as Majlis Bandaraya Ipoh, Majlis Daerah Kampar, Majlis Perbandaran Manjung, and Majlis Daerah Batu Gajah. GEA, a certified supplier of feedstock for sustainable fuels, specialises in biodiesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), paving the way for a greener future.

The driving force behind Biovisma is Mervyn Cheng, a University of Malaya graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. With roots in the palm oil plantation industry, Cheng honed his expertise in chart analysis, hedging, and sustainability. In 2014, he transitioned to the waste-to-energy sector, recognising the untapped potential of used cooking oil (UCO) as a renewable energy resource.

Beginning in Vietnam, he tackled the pressing issue of UCO being illegally recycled into the food chain, a practice with severe health risks. In 2021, he expanded to Malaysia, starting operations in Ipoh, Perak. Under his leadership, Biovisma now collects over 80,000 kilograms of UCO monthly, supported by a dedicated team of over 15 employees. Cheng’s feedback-driven management style emphasises collaboration and inclusivity. By fostering open communication and work-life balance, he ensures a motivated team aligned with the mission of sustainability. His leadership philosophy has been instrumental in creating an environment where innovation and environmental stewardship thrive.
