In this issue, Top 10 of Asia shares its list (presented in no particular order) of Asia’s Most Inspiring Young Violinists – the Top 10, celebrating the remarkable journeys, outstanding accomplishments and inspiring artistry of these gifted musicians who are shaping the future of music across Asia and beyond.
Ambi Subramaniam (India)
Hailed as “the new king of Indian classical violin” and “India’s Itzhak Pearlmann”, Ambi Subramaniam has been trained by his father and guru, Dr L. Subramaniam, since he was three years old and gave his first stage performance at the age of seven. He has performed across the world and was named among GQ’s 25 Most Influential Young Indians in 2021. Along with his sister Bindu, Ambi runs SaPa, which teaches music to over 40,000 children. He has co-authored over 30 textbooks, including India’s first series of textbooks dedicated to teaching the Carnatic violin. He is a youth delegate at the United Nations for the Sri Chinmoy Peace Meditation group. Ambi has a PhD in developing a global violin technique (2020), an MPhil in Music (2014), an MBA in Finance (2012) and an LTCL in the western violin from the Trinity College of Music.
Giovani Biga (Indonesia)
Giovani Biga is one of Indonesia’s most promising talents in the classical music scene. He began playing the violin at age nine under Mr. Damianus, later continuing his studies with Joel Suprapto, Amelia, Prima Muchlisin and Fafan Isfandiar. Making his solo orchestral debut at just 14 years old, he has since appeared as a soloist with many of Indonesia’s leading ensembles, including the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Jakarta Concert Orchestra, Jakarta Sinfonietta and Nusantara Symphony Orchestra. Giovani regularly showcases his leadership and virtuosity as Concertmaster and soloist for the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra, Jakarta Sinfonietta and Jakarta Concert Orchestra. Internationally, he has performed with ensembles such as the Hamburger Camerata and Detmolder Kammerorchester and represented Indonesia in the 2013 Asian Youth Orchestra. His global performances have brought him to prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Seoul Arts Center (with the Korean Symphony Orchestra) and the Konzertverein. Giovani’s accolades include major prizes from the Stockholm International Violin Competition, the XXIV Arnuero International Music Competition in Spain and the Auryn Kammermusik Wettbewerb in Germany.
Takara Oiwa (Japan)
Takara Oiwa started playing the violin when he was 4 years old. In 2019, he received first prize at the 73rd Student Music Competition of Japan (junior high school division for violin), along with several special awards: the Uzuka Award, the Suntory Foundation’s Special Award (which included the loan of the old violin named “Jakobe Steiner”, made in 1669) and the Yokohama Citizen’s Award (audience award). From the same year, he started to learn advanced techniques and ways of expression under the guidance of Professor Takako Yamasaki. In addition, he made a profound study of solfège and harmony under the guidance of Professor Masaki Teluya at the Tokyo University of the Arts Junior Academy from 2019 to 2023. From 2023, Takara joined the International Menuhin Music Academy, located in Switzerland, to pursue a more professional approach to playing, both technically and in exploring great colours of sound under the guidance of Oleg Kaskiv. Having the opportunity to perform almost 30 concerts per year (the primary countries where he performed were Switzerland, Italy, Greece, France and Austria) with members of the academy from diverse countries gave him invaluable learning experiences.
Imran Azim (Malaysia)
Imran Azim is an award-winning Malaysian violinist, performing artist, music educator and music producer whose work reflects a passion for cultural exchange and artistic excellence. Originally from Sarawak, Malaysia, he is dedicated to showcasing Malaysia’s rich musical heritage while embracing diverse influences from classical, world, Latin, jazz and traditional Malaysian music. As a performer, Imran has represented Malaysia on international platforms, including the World Championships of Performing Arts (WCOPA) 2023. He was also selected as one of the featured Malaysian artists in the International Artists Project, contributing to the global album through the world music single “Fiesta di Malaysia”, a multicultural production celebrating the traditions, diversity and cultural identity of Malaysia for international audiences. In recognition of his contributions to the performing arts, Imran received the GILMS International Special Honour Award 2025 in Singapore, where he was honoured with the Cultural Excellence in International Performing Arts Award 2025. Alongside his performance career, he is committed to nurturing future musicians through violin instruction while continuing to develop as a recording artist and music producer.
Elias David Moncado (Malaysia)
German-Spanish-Malaysian violinist Elias David Moncado, a protégé of German superstar violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, has been described by Mutter as “one of the greatest talents of his generation”. At just 25, he has already performed on the world’s greatest stages as a celebrated soloist, praised for his spellbinding stage presence, at venues ranging from New York‘s famed Carnegie Hall, Toronto‘s Roy Thomson Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Konzerthaus Vienna, Théâtre des Champs-Élysées Paris, Tonhalle Zürich, Smetana Hall Prague, Royal Opera House Muscat, Oman, Tokyo, Seoul and the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas Concert Hall in Kuala Lumpur. Catapulted to prominence as the youngest ever winner of the 1st Grand Prix — plus ten special prizes — at the 2019 International Karol Lipiński Competition in Poland at just 18 years old, and in 2021 winner of the Valsesia Musica and the Vladimir Spivakov Competitions in Italy and Russia respectively, Moncado’s artistry “electrifies, moves”. Amongst his discographies are his latest CD, “Héritage”, which was released in July 2026 with Warner Classics. Elias performs on a collection of fine violins, most prominently on the Stradivarius violin, Ludwig, Ex-Szigeti of 1724, provided by the L-Bank Baden-Württemberg.
Chloe Chua (Singapore)
Chloe Chua has emerged as one of the most extraordinary young violinists of her generation, captivating global audiences with her remarkable artistry and breathtaking musicality. After winning the joint 1st Prize at the prestigious 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists, Chloe’s international reputation has continued to flourish, with performances alongside world-renowned orchestras including Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. She was also named the youngest-ever Artist-in-Residence with SSO for two seasons, a testament to her exceptional talent and artistry. Her debut album featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Locatelli’s Harmonic Labyrinth achieved 1.6 million streams, while her Butterfly Lovers and Paganini release reached top positions on music charts. Currently studying under Kolja Blacher in Berlin, Chloe performs on a magnificent 1753 Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin, continuing to inspire audiences worldwide with her extraordinary talent and promising musical journey.
Chan Mei Teng (Malaysia)
Chan Mei Teng has emerged as a remarkable violinist whose exceptional artistry, dedication and musical brilliance continue to captivate audiences. Beginning her violin journey at the age of seven, Mei Teng’s passion for music has blossomed into an impressive career, earning her a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Music Degree from UCSI University. As a celebrated soloist, she has achieved outstanding recognition through prestigious competitions, including winning the Grand Patron Prize at the 2019 Euroasia Strings Competition, reaching the finals of the Osaka International Music Competition and receiving the Gold Award at the 2021 MIA Young Musicians Online Music Competition. She has also delivered captivating performances as a soloist in Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with the UCSI University Orchestra. Beyond her solo achievements, Mei Teng has excelled as a chamber and orchestral musician, collaborating with esteemed artists and serving as concertmistress of the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Her musical journey reached new heights when she joined the prestigious Asian Youth Orchestra, touring 13 countries and performing alongside internationally acclaimed soloists, further cementing her reputation as one of Malaysia’s most promising violin talents.
Martin Peh (Singapore)
Martin Peh stands as one of Singapore’s most accomplished and versatile string musicians, celebrated for his exceptional musicianship, artistic depth and remarkable achievements on the global stage. A distinguished violinist and violist, Martin has built an impressive career performing across a wide range of chamber and orchestral settings. His outstanding musical journey is marked by an illustrious academic background, having earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, alongside degrees from the prestigious Yale School of Music and the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music. During his time at Stony Brook, he further distinguished himself as a music theory teaching assistant under acclaimed composer Perry Goldstein and participated in the renowned Emerson String Quartet Institute. Returning to Singapore, Martin has become a prominent figure in the classical music scene, performing with leading ensembles including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Resound Collective, Metropolitan Festival Orchestra and Asian Cultural Symphony Orchestra.
Clarissa Tamara (Indonesia)
Clarissa Tamara has captivated the world with her extraordinary violin talent, earning international recognition as one of the most remarkable young violinists of her generation. An Indonesian professional violinist, Clarissa achieved global acclaim as the “world’s fastest violinist” after performing “Flight of the Bumblebee” at an astonishing 273 BPM, playing approximately 18 notes per second. This record-breaking feat propelled her onto international stages, with performances across Indonesia, the United States, Japan, Singapore and Malaysia. A prodigious talent from a young age, Clarissa released two albums by the age of nine, with one earning prestigious recognition at the Indonesian Music Awards. She graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the University of North Texas and continues to inspire as a performer, educator and mentor. Currently pursuing her master’s degree at the University of Georgia, Clarissa remains dedicated to sharing her artistry and shaping the next generation of musicians.
Julia Wang (China)
At just 18 years old, Julia Wang has already established herself as one of the most extraordinary rising stars in the classical music world, dazzling audiences with her exceptional artistry, brilliance and captivating stage presence. A remarkable competition prodigy, Julia has achieved an impressive collection of accolades, including being the youngest major prize winner at the 2024 Stuttgart International Violin Competition, earning 2nd Prize at the prestigious 2025 Cooper International Violin Competition and securing 1st Prize at the 2022 Grumiaux International Violin Competition. Her outstanding talent has led her to perform with world-class ensembles including the Stuttgart Philharmonic, Armenian State Symphony Orchestra and Salzburg Chamber Soloists. Beginning violin studies at just three years old, Julia’s extraordinary journey has been shaped by mentorship from legendary violinists and educators, including Ana Chumachenco, Zakhar Bron and Leonidas Kavakos. With her remarkable achievements and boundless potential, Julia continues to shine as a powerful force shaping the future of classical music.
