In the heart of Malaysia’s vibrant art scene, the highly anticipated Artjamila Gallery & Museum opened its doors to the public, inviting attendees to step into a world of creativity, emotion, and profound talent. Invited on behalf of Top 10 of Asia, the writer had the privilege of attending this remarkable event, and it was nothing short of a transformative experience.

The opening ceremony was more than just a celebration of art; it was a touching tribute to the woman behind the magic, Noorhashimah Noordin, the mother of the internationally renowned artist, Wan Jamila Wan Shaiful Bahri, affectionately known as Artjamila. Noorhashimah, a retired architect and lecturer, played a pivotal role in Jamila’s life. She was not only her mother but also her mentor and inspiration. Her passing in June left a void, but her legacy lives on in the breathtaking art that her daughter creates.

Jamila’s journey is unique. Diagnosed with autism at the tender age of two, she faced challenges in communication, particularly with her mother. As conventional schools lacked facilities for children with special needs, Noorhashimah took it upon herself to provide Jamila with an education tailored to her needs. It was through this process that Noorhashimah crafted a curriculum centred around art, a decision that would change the course of Jamila’s life.

Jamila’s art is a testament to her remarkable talent and unwavering dedication. Her detailed sketches, meticulous size considerations, and masterful use of colour have propelled her to international acclaim. Her works are not just paintings; they are windows into her emotions, her connection with nature, and her love for the environment.

The event was graced by Associate Prof Mumtaz Mokhtar, Head of Fine Arts Studies at the College of Creative Art in UiTM Shah Alam. Prof Mumtaz, who has extensively studied Artjamila’s work, officiated the ceremony. Her presence underscored the significance of Artjamila’s contributions to the world of art.

During a guided tour through the gallery, Prof Mumtaz shared insights into the themes that thread through Artjamila’s art. She explained how it has evolved over the years, capturing the essence of nature and the environment, and echoing the emotions that lie within us all.

Walking through the gallery’s halls, the writer couldn’t help but be moved by the depth and beauty of Artjamila’s creations. Her ability to express emotions through art is truly remarkable. Each piece tells a story, inviting viewers to explore their own feelings and connect with the world in a profound way.

Leaving the Artjamila Gallery & Museum, the writer carried with them a renewed appreciation for the power of art and the incredible talent that Malaysia has in Artjamila. Her art transcends boundaries, communicates across languages, and touches the soul. It’s a source of pride for Malaysians, representing our nation on the global stage.

The opening of Artjamila Gallery & Museum was not just an art exhibition; it was an emotional journey through the life and works of an extraordinary artist. It’s a place where art and emotion intertwine, where the legacy of a mother’s love lives on through her daughter’s creations, and where visitors can experience the world in a new light.
